How veneers can be used as “instant orthodontics”

Many people have problems with the alignment of the teeth, such as crooked teeth or gaps between teeth. In order to straighten the teeth, orthodontics is one option. This involves either braces or clear aligners (such as Invisalign), which are used to put pressure on the teeth in order to gradually shift them towards the correct alignment.

At the same time, there are quite a few people who would like to have a more even smile with straighter teeth, but who don’t want to commit to the expense and hassle of months or even years of orthodontic treatment. Fortunately, cosmetic dentistry offers a solution. In the right patient, porcelain veneers can be used as a type of “instant orthodontics” to create an even, straight smile in just two visits to the dentist.

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin pieces of porcelain that are bonded to the front of teeth in order to change their appearance. They are custom-created for each patient. What types of alignment issues can be addressed with veneers?

A number of aesthetic problems with the teeth can be addressed using veneers. This includes many issues that commonly cause people to seek orthodontics, such as gaps between teeth, teeth that are mildly to moderately misaligned (crooked and/or crowded), and teeth that are too small and widely spaced. In fact, veneers can also address issues that orthodontics is not able to address, such as chipped teeth, teeth with discoloration (that can’t be addressed with whitening), and misshapen teeth.

It’s important to note that veneers are not able to change the actual alignment of the teeth. If there are problems resulting from poor alignment of the bite, such as issues with the TMJ (the temporomandibular joint, where the lower jaw meets the skull) or excessive wear on teeth, then these issues will not be addressed through veneers. In these cases, orthodontic treatment may be indicated in order to properly address the functional problems.
